Like most people, I eat my meals throughout the day while either watching shows, movies, or even YouTube videos. I’ve read articles and, ironically, watched videos that claim this habit isn’t good for us, but my adolescent mind must not care because it seems to love to be entertained. Sometimes, this habit leads me to continue watching shows and videos far past the actual time spent eating my food. Other times, the habit leads me to keep eating more and more food because I become so fixated on the moving images and the process of dropping food down the ol’ windpipe. A lot of the things I watch do hold merit or some level of educational value, so it’s not all just mindless slop. I tend to watch those when I’m not eating. I’d also like to mention that I don’t waste all my days watching videos and shows; I do things of substance.
Out of every show I’ve ever watched, Seinfeld is my favorite of all-time. From March to May or June, it was the show of choice during my bouts of free time and eating. However, after finishing all nine seasons of Seinfeld, I didn’t know how to mindlessly entertain myself during my abundant free time. I resorted to watching A Different World, a show I had previous experience with since I watched all of season 1 in the fall of ‘25. For context, I had stopped watching the show in the fall because I didn’t like that they took Denise off after season one (I now realize that the show is better without her). The beginning episodes of season two were just kinda slow, and I was still adjusting to no Denise. It was like watching Fresh Prince once OG Aunt Viv left after season 3. Don’t get me wrong, I love A Different World, but it didn’t live up to the high I was coming off of after watching Seinfeld. I got to the latter half of season 3 when I lowkey just couldn’t take it anymore; I mostly can’t stand the writers pushing Dwayne and Whitney like every episode. I finally took it upon myself to find a new show.
I searched on Google for “shows like Seinfeld”. I stumbled across an old Reddit article–for some reason, Reddit has the answers to like every problem–that recommended I watch a show called It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I probably started watching the show in like mid june. As of writing this, I’ve just started season 8, so that’s 8 seasons in a little more than a month. I’ve probably watched at least 1-2 episodes per day. It’s probably my second favorite all-time now, behind Seinfeld. I think both shows resonate with me so well because both their characters are such horrible people. Some episodes are a struggle to watch because the plots are just so inherently evil. I think that draws me back; I love it so much that I can’t help it. I’ve even debated buying a dick towel.
As for the actual show, though, I like all the characters, except for Dee because no one likes Dee. Mac’s probably my favorite. I think he has the best quotes and moments for the most part. Charlie’s an illiterate idiot. I think Frank just enjoys acting stupid and doing stupid stuff. As for Dennis and Dee, the show just skips past the fact that they went to UPenn, and they're as idiotic as all the other characters.
In the end, the show has really filled the void that I had after finishing Seinfeld. Though I’m not sure what this says about me as a person. My 2 favorite shows center around selfish, narcissistic people who make everyone else’s lives around them worse. Does that make me a bad person? Is that our human nature or just mine? Maybe those articles that told me to stop watching TV while I eat were right. Then again, I probably wouldn’t have discovered one of my favorite shows if I’d listened.
