This Summer, I’ve made it some sort of mission to read more books. I don’t really have a motive as to why. Maybe it was the allure of embracing some lost inner adolescent self, but I’m not really sure.
Apparently, this reading stuff we used to do for fun is somewhat good for us or something. Despite the allure of that 3hr doomscroll before bed, reading a book and putting down my phone is probably better for me. Instead of looking at someone else's life (which seems quite enjoyable in itself), reading about someone else's life is, for some reason, better for my health. Maybe flipping a page stimulates more hand muscles than the constant up-down thumb movements of a doomscroll.
I find that my mind isn’t as encapsulated as I read books now, compared to when I was younger. I constantly look at the page numbers increasing as I try to hit some sort of page quota for the day. This doesn’t mean that I haven't enjoyed the books I've read so far, but it's not the same enjoyment I experienced when I used to read Percy Jackson or Harry Potter for hours. When I read now, the time doesn’t just float away anymore. It tends to be ever-present, like a constant reminder of how long I’ve been reading and how long I have left to read. Maybe this could stem from a busier life I live now, or a greater difficulty in the books I’m reading. However, I assume it’ll go away the more reading I undertake.
Anyway, I’d like this entry to serve as some sort of log for the books I’ve read since school has been out. The list will expand as I read more throughout the month of July, but this is what I got for now.
Books read through mid May to End of June
- Wuthering Heights - Emily Brontë
- Walden - Henry David Thoreau
- Slaughterhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut
- The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Murder on the Orient Express - Agatha Christie
- Currently reading 1984 - George Orwell
I’d say I enjoyed all of these books. However, Wuthering Heights and Walden were very boring at times. Also, Walden was incredibly pretentious and quite hard to read.
When it comes to writing these blog posts, I hope that I don’t come off as corny or pretentious, given that I post on some obscure niche blog in the year of our lord, 2026. By writing these posts or entries, (I ain’t really decided yet), I hope that my writing and grammar improve, so I’m sure I probably got some errors here and there. I think I have been improving, though, because I’ve begun using random buzzwords to make my prose seem more intellectual.
Sports
To end off this entry, I’d like to bring attention to Sports. Regarding the World Cup, I managed to watch most of the group stage games and all of the beginning round of 32 games. This tournament has been great so far. I really hope the final lives up to the 2022 Qatar final. To this day, I truly believe that was one of the best games of soccer my eyes have ever graced
As for this World Cup, I can no longer root for South Africa anymore since they lost to Canada on Sunday. However, I still got the U.S. assuming they win tomorrow against Bosnia. Knowing U.S. soccer, we could easily blow this game, but I trust our team, and CP is back from injury, so I know we got it. The secret to winning is manifesting the victory before it even happens.
The Monday games were all class, especially the Morocco v Dutch and Paraguay v Germany. It was lowkey, just good soccer. It’s always fun to see underdogs beat the European powerhouses. The Netherlands just played bad and their penalties were abysmal. As for Germany, they followed up their disappointing Euros knockout with another round of 32 knockout to a team the U.S. beat 4-1. As for Brazil, I think they’re overrated and probably gonna get knocked out soon. Big ups to Paraguay and Morocco for moving on.
As for my Timberwolves, we'll see if this LaMelo trade ends up working out. Assuming we stay healthy, it will probably help our contention even though we’ll still probably get dominated by OKC and the Spurs in the west for another 3 years. I’d like to thank Naz Ried for his contributions to the team and the city of Minnesota. We’re definitely gonna miss his size and presence now that he’s gone. I'd also like to thank the wolves for deporting Julius Randle to the nets. I’m hopeful for this upcoming season.
