This summer, the soccer gods blessed us with yet another World Cup. A World Cup, spanning 39 days, connected fans around the world to grown men kicking a spherical ball for upwards of 90 minutes across 104 games. That same World Cup started with 48 teams, but ended with one champion.
The World Cup concluded on Sunday with a 1-0 win for Spain over the reigning champions, Argentina. Although the game didn’t live up to the 2022 final, it was still a decent game with its very own antics.
I couldn’t really care that Spain won. I wouldn’t call myself a Spain hater. I just don’t care for them. I will, however, put on the record that I hate Lamine Yamal. I don’t actually hate him or have any reason to hate him (hate is a strong word). I just believe that in sports you need your fans and your haters; I’m a hater.
As for Argentina, I couldn’t be happier that they lost. I’d consider myself a Messi hater and an Argentina hater as a whole. I’d like to personally congratulate them on their inability to get any shots in the final. I still wish they lost to Cape Verde.
As usual, the World Cup produced many entertaining games and stories. As an American, I was blessed to watch these games at normal times whenever I so pleased. It would have been nice to go to a game, but I’m not big ballin yet. Maybe in like 2030, assuming the world doesn’t end by then.
This tournament really cemented soccer as my favorite sport. It’s disheartening that we have to go back to watching MLS now and crummy Premier League games. That said, I know that all good things must come to an end at some point.
